One Detroit

There are only about 400 to 450 Holocaust survivors still alive in Michigan. Descendants of Holocaust survivors are preserving their families’ stories and carrying on their legacies. One Detroit contributor Sarah Zientarski visited a storytelling workshop for second and third-generation children of survivors at The Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills and talked to participants about how their families ended up in Michigan after World War II. The story is part of One Detroit’s ongoing “Destination Detroit” series.

Descendants of Holocaust survivors preserve their families’ stories

One Detroit is sharing stories of Holocaust survivors who settled in Michigan as part of our ongoing “Destination Detroit” series. There were about 4,000 survivors who came to the state after World War II. Irene Miller is among the survivors who rebuilt her life in Michigan. She spoke to One Detroit contributor Sarah Zientarski about survival, loss and strength during and after the Holocaust.

Irene Miller, a Holocaust survivor’s story

As part of our “Destination Detroit” series and in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re shining a light on people who have made Southwest Detroit their home. One Detroit’s Bill Kubota reports on how residents are working to preserve the community’s history by documenting stories of people who grew up there. Their oral history project is called VOCES, which is Spanish for voices.

Destination Detroit: Exploring family roots, African American migration and more

For decades, Detroit wasn’t just a stop on the map for musicians, it was the destination. As jazz evolved and musicians migrated north during the Great Migration, Detroit became a place where the genre flourished. 

Oral historian Veronica Johnson has partnered with the Detroit Sound Conservancy to create the Detroit Women in Jazz Oral History Project, a digital archive of interviews with women in the city’s jazz scene. 

One Detroit contributor Cecelia Sharpe talks with Johnson about the women who have shaped jazz in Detroit and how their stories are being preserved.  

Plus, Detroit Sound Conservancy Director Michelle Jahra McKinney talks about efforts to restore the historic Blue Bird Inn jazz club and keep Detroit’s music legacy alive for future generations.

Oral history project preserves the legacy of Detroit women in jazz

@detroitpbs has launched its Destination Detroit initiative, a project that explores the rich history of the people who have shaped Southeast Michigan through a collection of interviews and stories.

The project continues through 2026 and coincides with the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.  

One Detroit contributor Zoe Clark talks with Detroit PBS Vice President of Content Ed Moore, Detroit Historical Society President & CEO Elana Rugh, and Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History President & CEO Neil Barclay about the initiative.

Destination Detroit initiative tells the region's story through the people who shaped it | #MPC25

For many Vietnamese Americans living in Michigan, their journey to the United States began 50 years ago.  

One Detroit’s Bill Kubota talks with three Vietnamese Americans in metro Detroit – Hoa and Jacqueline Dinh and Hang Phonrath – about their family histories.  

This story is part of Detroit PBS’ Destination Detroit project, which explores Southeast Michigan’s rich history and the people who have shaped it. 

The Vietnamese American Association of Michigan hosts a commemorative event for the 50th anniversary of Fall of Saigon at the Hazel Park Community Center on May 18. 

One Detroit will be on-site to gather interviews about the Vietnamese American experience. The public is invited to attend and share their family’s story.

50 years after the Fall of Saigon, Vietnamese Americans in Michigan reflect on their journey

The Great Migration is the focus of a new PBS documentary series produced by Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr.  

The new series, “Great Migrations: People on The Move,” documents the Black exodus to the North and the American west, with Detroit as a primary destination for many individuals and families. 

In conjunction with the documentary series, One Detroit shares stories of people who’ve come to the Motor City as part of the migration.  

Senior Producer Bill Kubota talks with contributor Stephen Henderson about his family’s journey from the South to Detroit and what happened when they got there.

Down South to Detroit: Stephen Henderson details his family’s history during The Great Migration

Southeast Michigan has long been a destination for those seeking opportunity and Arab American communities have been part of that journey going back to the 1800s. 

Arab American National Museum Curator of Education David Serio, an Arab American living in Michigan, shared his family’s migration story as part of @detroitpbs’ Destination Detroit initiative. 

One Detroit producer Sarah Zientarski sat down with Serio to talk about his family’s migration story, the history of Arab immigration in Michigan, and the thriving Arab American community in Southeast Michigan.

Arab American National Museum’s David Serio details the history of Arab immigration in Michigan

Much is documented about the men who migrated and the jobs in Detroit during the Great Migration. However, the impact and influence women had during that time is lesser known. 

One Detroit contributor Stephen Henderson, host of “American Black Journal,” looks at the influence Black women had in the church and community during the Great Migration of the 20th century.  

He talked with Rev. Dr. Constance Simon of Fellowship Chapel and Rev. Paula Lee-Barnes from In His Presence Ministries about women’s role during the Great Migration and their leadership in the church today.

From Southern Kentucky to Garden City: Nolan details family’s history during the Great Migration

In conjunction with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s PBS documentary series, “Great Migrations: A People on the Move,” Detroit PBS and One Detroit gathered at The Station at Michigan Central to collect visitors’ migration stories, hearing how their families landed in Detroit. 

Over three weekends in February, One Detroit heard stories of migration from the Deep South, Appalachia, Mexico, Honduras, Burundi, Germany, Laos, Vietnam and more.  

Participants shared their personal recollections about how they and their families came to Detroit, the challenges and opportunities they faced when they arrived, and the lives they’ve created for themselves and future generations.

Dozens of Detroiters share their family’s migration stories at Michigan Central Station

For three weekends in February, Detroit PBS and One Detroit partnered with Michigan Central to offer a range of activities celebrating the impact of the Great Migration on the people and culture of Detroit. 

These events were held in conjunction with Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s PBS documentary series “Great Migrations: A People on the Move.” 

The events culminated with a panel discussion moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and “American Black Journal” host Stephen Henderson with City of Detroit Historian Jamon Jordan, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History President & CEO Neil Barclay, and Karen Batchelor, a genealogist, attorney and first Black member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. 

One Detroit presents an excerpt from the panel discussion. The panelists share their family’s migration stories and talk about the continuing impact of the migration on Detroit today.

Veda Pernell of Mt. Clemons said it’s important for younger generations to know their history. She talks about her mother becoming the first African American manager at one of the large companies in Ohio. 

After Pernell’s mother got married, she moved to Michigan. Pernell shares that her father was a contractor and had a street named after him in Sterling Heights.

Bonnie Schow | The Station at Michigan Central

Bill Goodwin of Shelby Township shares the story of his parents, who came to Detroit in the early 1920s and became autoworkers. 

His mother worked at the Packard Plant, retired from the Fleetwood Cadillac Plant and has a Cadillac crest on her tombstone. His dad worked at Ford for $5 a day like thousands of other autoworkers in the city. 

“My dad said that that $5 a day was a big deal,” Goodwin recalled. “He said ‘Mr. Ford absolutely got his money’s worth out of you for that $5.’”

Ellarose Preston of Eastpointe reflects on the life of her great-grandmother, Rose Johnson, who comes from a blended sharecropping family that had 17 kids. 

Her great grandma was not able to work on the land because it made her sick, and she was the only child in her family to graduate from high school. 

When Johnson moved to Detroit, she was instrumental in sustaining her family.

Justine Johnson | The Station at Michigan Central

Johannah Martinez is a Harper Woods resident who traces her lineage back to Germany. To escape post-World War II Germany, her grandfather fled to New York to earn money to bring his wife and son, Johannah’s father, to the U.S. Shortly after, family friends sponsored their family, reuniting them in Detroit.

David Williams from Detroit explains his mother’s side of the family moved from Mississippi. Once in Detroit, his grandmother became an entrepreneur and ran a business selling Avon products. Williams said Detroit provided many opportunities, which drew family members to the city.
