American Black Journal – Jazz Fest Unveils 2021 Poster As It Prepares To Go Live Again

On the next American Black Journal, the Detroit Jazz Festival is back to entertaining live in-person audiences this Labor Day weekend after going virtual last year during the pandemic. Jazz Festival Foundation President Chris Collins talks with Stephen about the COVID safety protocols that will be in place this year.

Plus, he officially unveils the 2021 Jazz Festival poster on the show. Stephen talks with the artist who created the poster about what inspired her design.

And, jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold speaks with Stephen about coming to Detroit to perform and how the pandemic and racial injustice have influenced his music and his life over the past year. In a high-profile case last December, Harrold’s son was assaulted by a white woman at a New York hotel who had falsely accused the Black teen of stealing her iPhone. Harrold’s recorded video of the incident went viral and further ignited cries of racial profiling. And, we’ll have a special performance by the Detroit Jazz Festival’s artist-in-residence, singer Dee Dee Bridgewater.
