A look at the upcoming Museum of Detroit Electronic Music

May 22, 2026

The Movement Festival takes over Detroit’s Hart Plaza over the Memorial Day Weekend and will feature more than 115 electronic music artists. Meanwhile, plans are underway for the creation of the Museum of Detroit Electronic Music (MODEM), which will preserve and celebrate Detroit’s legacy as the birthplace of techno music and hip-hop culture.

Host Stephen Henderson sits down with the museum’s founder and executive director, Adriel Thornton, to talk about how techno was created by a group of African American teenagers in Detroit and how it has become its own musical genre that is popular around the world.  Thornton also explains his vision for the museum and updates Henderson on the efforts to find a physical location for it.
