Sep 17, 2025
The 6th annual Detroit Black Film Festival takes place September 25 – 28 at four venues across the city. This year’s event will showcase 72 independent films from 30 countries.
Festival co-founders, Lazar and Marshalle Favors of Trinity Films Entertainment Group, talk with American Black Journal host Stephen Henderson about how the event celebrates the creativity and talent of African American filmmakers and actors from around the world.
They discuss the current state of Black cinema, how they select films for the festival, and how Detroit has seen an explosion of independent filmmaking in the city. They also talk about the inclusion of the “Taste of Black Spirits” tour in this year’s festival, which features handcrafted cocktails made with African American-owned spirit brands.
