Eye Care For Detroit offers city’s first walk-in eye care clinic and mobile unit
Apr 15, 2025
Eye Care For Detroit, a nonprofit organization created by Dr. Cleamon Moorer, Jr., is helping Detroit residents who are homebound and underserved get access to vision care. The organization operates the city’s first walk-in eye care clinic and a mobile unit that services patients at their homes.
Eye Care For Detroit was created in 2022 after Dr. Moorer found there was a lack of resources, information and awareness surrounding eye care, particularly among the homebound community. His other company, American Advantage Home Care, Inc. (AAHC), was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to serve homebound residents in Detroit.
Dr. Moorer’s passion for eye care extends beyond the call to serve, however. Born with congenital cataracts in both eyes, he was legally blind by the age of 21. Unable to afford the expensive surgery, the Grace Guild of Sinai-Grace Hospital stepped in and covered the cost of restoring Dr. Moorer’s vision.
Host Stephen Henderson sat down with Dr. Moorer during National Minority Health Month — an observance that raises awareness of health disparities affecting minority communities — to talk about the need for accessible eye care for homebound Detroiters and underserved communities.
They talk about Dr. Moorer’s efforts to eliminate barriers by providing transportation to the clinic, servicing patients at home with the mobile unit, and offering affordable options for vision care. He also shares how his vision issues inspired him to create the organization.
