Leader of the organization “Encourage Me I’m Young” discusses programs designed to empower African American children

Mar 13, 2026

“Encourage Me I’m Young (EMIY)” is a local nonprofit that focuses on empowering African American boys and restoring families. Host Stephen Henderson sits down with the Founder & President Dr. Calvin Mann to talk about two of the organization’s initiatives: the “Reading is Life” program and National Respect Day, taking place on April 6.

Mann explains that he focuses on Black boys and their families because of the many challenges they face, including violence, a lack of father figures, and literacy. He also discusses how difficult the current economic environment has been for nonprofits.
