Automation Alley: Was COVID-19 a Wake-Up Call?

How has COVID-19 hurt manufacturing sector in Southeastern Michigan? Like most would expect, but the shutdown might be the opportunity to redirect our local industry into a new era.

That’s according to Automation Alley CEO Tom Kelly who wants local manufacturers to join the Industry 4.0 digital revolution where, in many ways, we lag behind countries like Germany, Korea and China…especially China.

As Kelly tells One Detroit’s Bill Kubota, the coronavirus crisis just might be the wake-up call needed.

Tom Kelly makes a great point about the urgency of moving toward Industry 4.0. However, for many small and mid-sized local manufacturers, the initial cost of automation can be a massive hurdle. What practical steps or regional support systems are available to help these smaller businesses transition without risking financial strain?
