Detroit native, Cass Tech alum Michael R. Jackson wins Pulitzer for off-Broadway musical

Congratulations to Michael R. Jackson on winning the Pulitzer Prize for a distinguished play by an American author.

Last month, it was named the best musical of the 2019-2020 season by the New York Drama Critics Circle.

Jackson’s musical is the first to earn a Pulitzer without reaching Broadway. And of the ten musicals ever to win a Pulitzer (a group that includes “Hamilton” and “A Chorus Line”), it’s the first one created by an African-American playwright.

The show played to sell-out audiences when it ran in 2019. The reviews praised it as a rare piece of art that was simultaneously thought-provoking, daring and entertaining to both serious theater buffs and consumers of pop culture.

The Pulitzer jury praised “A Strange Loop” as a “metafictional musical that tracks the creative process of an artist transforming issues of identity, race, and sexuality,” a description that captures its profound reach.
