Five Detroit mayoral candidates discussed public transportation and their visions for the city’s bus system at a forum hosted by Detroit Moves May 1.
One Detroit contributor Stephen Henderson, moderated the discussion at Newlab, a technology and mobility incubator located on the Michigan Central campus. The event was the first 2025 Detroit mayoral forum focused on transportation issues.
Those who participated included businessman Jonathan Barlow, Detroit City Council member Fred Durhal III, former Detroit City Council member and nonprofit CEO Saunteel Jenkins, attorney Todd Perkins and Rogelio Landin, who is running as a write-in candidate.
Others running for mayor include former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, businessman Joel Haashiim, Rev. Solomon Kinloch, Jr. of Triumph Church, Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, and DaNetta Simpson, a two-time mayoral candidate.
Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running for governor, has announced he will not seek a fourth term as mayor.
According to a 2025 report from the University of Michigan titled “Transportation Insecurity in the Motor City,” nearly one-third of Detroit adults, 36%, lack safe and reliable transportation, a figure that’s double the national average of 17%.
Another transportation forum, hosted by Transportation Riders United and other advocacy groups, is scheduled for June 4 at the Wayne State University Industry Innovation Center.
