A look back at current events, the arts and ‘The Black Church in Detroit’ in 2025

Jan 7, 2026

We’re taking a look back at some of the guests and topics that we covered on the show in 2025. Join us as we offer clips from conversations focusing on current events, the arts, and The Black Church in Detroit.

Host Stephen Henderson anchors this special episode, which includes interviews from segments about Blacks in the armed forces, the 100-year-old civil rights trial of Detroit’s Dr. Ossian Sweet, and the annual Silence the Violence march and rally presented by Church of the Messiah.

Then, we revisit conversations that involved African Americans in the arts. We hear from New York Times bestselling author Kwame Alexander, the world’s most recorded jazz bassist Ron Carter, the 2025 Kresge Eminent Artist Marion Hayden, and groundbreaking tenor George Shirley.

And finally, we take a brief look at some of the thought-provoking conversations raised in “The Black Church in Detroit” monthly series. In these segments, our guests discuss the role of Black women in the church during the Great Migration, how the church helps youth with their mental health challenges, and the evolution of Gospel music.
