Watch Party: Celebrating “The Black Church” series

Watch Party for “The Black Church”

Hosted by Stephen Henderson of American Black Journal

 February 1, 2021

At our virtual watch party event, we explored and honored the significance and history of the Black church in Detroit – in connection with the national premiere of the new PBS series The Black Church by noted historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

We got a sneak preview of the series, along with highlights from an exclusive interview with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Following the viewings, we discussed local history and the importance of the Black Church to the Detroit community with a group of esteemed panelists, including:

  • Rev. Kenita Harris, Detroit Bible Tabernacle
  • Freda Sampson, President, Frederick G. Sampson Foundation
  • Dr. Terri Laws, Professor of African and African-American Studies and Religious Studies, U-M Dearborn
