American Black Journal – The Black Church in Detroit: Preachers’ kids
This Week on American Black Journal:
The ‘Black Church in Detroit’ explores the lives of preachers’ kids
We don’t often hear the perspective that preachers’ kids have about growing up with a pastor as a parent. This week, American Black Journal’s “Black Church in Detroit” series examines the lives of preachers’ kids, or PKs for short.
Host Stephen Henderson sits down for a conversation with three Detroit preachers’ kids: Rev. Charles Christian Adams, senior pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church and son of Pastor Emeritus Dr. Charles G. Adams; Freda Sampson, daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Frederick G. Sampson II of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church; and Kaletah Vancol, daughter of Rev. Kenneth Flowers of Greater New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Henderson talks with the group about how, as children, they first became aware their fathers were ministers. They also discuss some of their memorable experiences as children and how their fathers’ ministries influenced the type of work they do today.
Plus, the panel of preachers’ kids explains what they see as their fathers’ legacies in the church and the community. And, they speak to the life lessons learned from having a pastor as a parent.
