Black Church in Detroit series examines women in ministry
Apr 1, 2026
As we wrap up Women’s History Month, our “Black Church in Detroit” series examines women in ministry. Host Stephen Henderson talks with Rev. Dr. Jessica Ingram, Founder of “The Woman Difference Collaborative,” along with two members of the group: Monica Anthony, First Lady of Fellowship Chapel, and Rev. Dr. Jacqueline Nelson, Senior Pastor of Davison Missionary Baptist Church. The guests discuss the pressure and challenges that exist for women pastors and faith leaders.
Rev. Ingram explains why and how she created “The Woman Difference Collaborative,” which brings together women in ministry to network and uplift each other at conferences and other events. They also advocate for Black women in other leadership roles, which included holding a large gathering in 2024 to support Kamala Harris’ presidential bid. Rev. Ingram also reflects on an instance where she was denied the opportunity to preach at a church because of her gender.
Anthony discusses her role as First Lady of Fellowship Chapel and how her relationship with the congregants has grown over the years. She talks about Rev. Ingram’s collaborative and how it provides a safe, non-judgmental environment for women faith leaders to connect.
Rev. Nelson shares her background in pastoral care and the path that led her to become senior pastor at Davison Missionary Baptist Church a year ago. She also addresses the longstanding gender dynamics in ministry and how there are people who do not believe women should serve as pastors.
