Black Church in Detroit series looks ahead to 2026

Jan 2, 2026

Our “Black Church in Detroit” series examines the priorities and challenges that lie ahead for the church and its congregants in 2026. Host Stephen Henderson sits down for a frank conversation with Rev. Charles Christian Adams from Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, Rev. Cindy Rudolph of Oak Grove AME Church, and Rev. Aramis Hinds from Breakers Covenant Church International. They talk about the issues and challenges they’ve dealt with in 2025 — many of which involved changes coming out of Washington, DC — and the impact it’s had on the church, the community and America.

Pastor Rudolph speaks to how the Black church should stand in the gap for the community in 2026 by expanding outreach services and advocating for healthcare, education and other important pillars. She also reiterates how African Americans are people of hope and resilience, and the church encourages people to always trust in God regardless of what is happening in the state, nation and world.

Pastor Adams talks about the stress and anxiety he has witnessed this year among his congregants and what is causing them to struggle psychologically and emotionally. He also offers hope that federal policies and other distractions can be reversed, and he believes 2026 is destined to be an exciting year filled with change.

Pastor Hinds discusses how challenging this year has been and how pastors have addressed both the emotional and spiritual needs of the community. He stresses the importance of religious leaders offering hope and empowering their congregations to be bold and remember Jesus’ message of love, freedom and hope.

Additionally, the pastors comment on the change coming next year when Detroit gets its first woman mayor, and they talk about the opportunity that exists in 2026 as the country celebrates its 250th birthday.
