The Easter season and the messages of resurrection in the Black church
Apr 29, 2025
Across the United States, Black churches overflowed with vibrant worship, soulful music and powerful preaching for Easter as congregants gathered to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. For African Americans, Easter is a sacred reminder of hope, endurance and liberation. The celebration is rooted in a deep spiritual tradition that has long intertwined faith with the fight for justice.
In recognition of the Easter season, American Black Journal’s “Black Church in Detroit” series explores the core messages of Easter and what the resurrection of Jesus means to the African American community. Host Stephen Henderson leads a conversation with Rev. Larry Simmons of Baber Memorial AME Church and Rev. Cindy Rudolph of Oak Grove AME Church. They talk about Jesus’ resurrection and what it teaches us about renewal, rebirth and overcoming challenges.
Rev. Rudolph also talks about what she hears from her congregation about their anxieties over the many changes coming out of Washington, D.C., how they are navigating through the challenges, and how the Easter season’s message of resiliency is not new for the Black community. She says more people are coming back to the church for spiritual nourishment.
Rev. Simmons explains how to find joy in Jesus’ resurrection. He reflects on the recent passing of Pope Francis and how his messages of compassion, liberation, humility and love resonate within the African American community.
