Feb 17, 2026

United Sound Systems Recording Studios of Detroit opened its doors to many artists including Charlie Parker, The Miracles, Bob Seger, and Eminem. However, it was legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton who made United Sound’s Studio A the P-Funk Lab for almost 20 years.

Clinton, founder of Parliament-Funkadelic, and Grammy Award-winning producer Maurice “Pirahnahead” Herd sat down at the Detroit Opera House with American Black Journal contributor Cecelia Sharpe of 90.9 WRCJ to talk about their time at the iconic United Sound Studios.

Clinton reflects on what attracted him to Detroit, his early hits, what made United Sound so special, and his most memorable moments recording in the P-Funk Lab.

Herd shares his story of being a young musician growing up in Detroit, how he came to know George Clinton, and how United Sound molded him as an artist and person.

The pair also share backstories on the funky music that shaped the sound of not only Detroit but America.
