One Detroit – University of Michigan African American Music Conference / Memorial Drive on Belle Isle / Marie Woo / Detroit Jazz City

  • University of Michigan African American Music Conference: Professor Emeritus Willis Patterson (MM ’59, BM ’58 voice) is the featured guest for the 2020 African American Music Conference. A joint celebration of his 90th birthday and his legendary career, the conference will feature events including a mixture of pre-recorded and live conversations featuring alums of SMTD, the 1963 cast of the NBC-TV production of Menotti’s opera Amahl and the Night Visitors, and will explore his teaching, artistry, and impact on the fields of jazz and African American concert repertoire.   • Memorial Drive on Belle Isle: The City of Detroit honored victims of COVID-19 with a day-long funeral procession around Belle Isle. WRCJ 90.9 FM provided soundtrack as mourners joined 14 consecutive funeral processions to drive past nearly 900 billboard-sized photos of their loved ones. Peter Whorf from WRCJ talks with Rochelle Riley, Director of Arts and Culture for the City of Detroit to find out more about the memorial.
  • Marie Woo, Kresge Artist: A special One Detroit report on this year’s Kresge Eminent Artist, 92-year-old ceramicist Marie Woo.
  • Detroit Jazz City: Catch a sneak peak of the first 5 minutes of “Detroit Jazz City,” the upcoming half hour DPTV documentary on Detroit’s role in helping introduce jazz music to the world. The documentary, which airs on Detroit PBS on September 18th at 9:30 p.m., will focus on the history of jazz in Detroit.
