American Black Journal – Mental Health, Oxford Shooting, Mask Debate, American Rescue Plan Funds

This Week on American Black Journal:

Host Stephen Henderson talks with CNS Healthcare President and CEO Michael Garrett about how people can take care of their mental health this holiday season. The two discuss the impacts the COVID-19 pandemic, incidents of systemic racism and increased gun violence have had on people’s mental health in communities of color, as well as the importance of finding resources to combat trauma, stress and anxiety. They explore the stigma associated with mental health in communities of color, and how to reduce it.

Plus, Garrett shines a light on the Oxford High School shooting and the impact on students, parents, teachers and community members’  mental health. He shares special tips and resources on how parents should talk with their children and understand what their kids are saying, thinking and feeling.

Then, a special COVID313 Community Coalition report will showcase the debate over wearing masks during the pandemic, and we’ll have excerpts from a recent American Black Journal and BridgeDetroit collaborative virtual town hall with community stakeholders and residents discussing how best to use Detroit’s share of federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.
