New initiative called “100 Caring Congregations” is creating caregiving ministries in the city’s Black churches

Oct 1, 2025

As part of our ongoing “Black Church in Detroit” series, host Stephen Henderson sits down with Dr. Marilyn French Hubbard, director of the “100 Caring Congregations” project. The initiative, funded by the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, is creating caregiving ministries in the city’s Black churches.

Dr. Hubbard explains how the project builds community by working with congregations to provide resources and practical information for aging African Americans and their family caregivers. She talks about the importance of having conversations in advance about growing older and the possibility of becoming ill. Dr. Hubbard also speaks about caregivers taking care of themselves and how the church can play a role in providing respite opportunities.
