COVID-313 Community Coalition Virtual Town Hall Week 6

Each Thursday at noon, the COVID313 Community Coalition for Families and Students host a virtual townhall focused on supporting parents, students, and families during the Coronavirus outbreak.

The pandemic has closed the Detroit Institute of Arts but in this Virtual Town Hall highlight Director Salvador Salort-Pons explains what the museum is doing for students and residents including food distribution, digital engagement and weekly online presentations.

Last week at the Virtual Town Hall, Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Nikolai Vitti detailed the plan to get digital devices to students for online studies.

This week we hear from Deputy Superintendent Iranetta Wright and Charter Schools advocate Rajeshri Bhatia give the latest on what’s in store for senior graduation celebrations and what’s being done to keep students safe this coming fall.

This week the virtual town hall included conversations about keeping expecting mothers and newborn healthy with insight from Kiddada Green of the Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association and Shirley Gray of SisterFriends Detroit.

The town hall is into its sixth week and the organizers have some important things to say as we work through the pandemic.

Detroiters in action! Hear observations from Jametta Lilly of the Detroit Parent Network, Cindy Gamboa of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation and Arlyssa Heard of 482Forward.

“I think the fact that we made it this far says something about our strength, our faith, our determiniation,” Heard said, who also provides a call to action regarding children in Detroit’s schools.
