One Detroit – Ukraine Band DakhaBrakha, Kresge Eminent Artist, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra
This Week on One Detroit Arts & Culture:
Season of Change: Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Searches for New Musical Director
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra has grown and increased its outreach over the last decade to include beautiful performances at the University of Michigan’s Hill Auditorium and pop-up concerts at local farmers markets across metro Detroit, but as it searches for the symphony’s new musical director, the organization had to do some soul searching, Sarah Calderini, the new executive director of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra said.
WRCJ 90.9FM Producer and host Peter Whorf sits down with Calderini to talk about the exciting changes that are coming for the symphony next season as well as the performances it still has left in its spring 2021-2022 season, including works from composers Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Carlos Simon, Andreas Delfs, Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonín Dvořák.
Facing the Music: Ukrainian Quartet DakhaBrakha Continue to Speak Out Against Russian Conflict
Music listeners and internet users across the globe may likely know the Russian band Pussy Riot, who were persecuted for fighting against political oppression, but what about the four-piece Ukrainian quartet with Detroit connections, DakhaBrakha? Cultural performances, like the ones DakhaBrakha put on, and Ukrainian heritage as a whole stand at risk of being stripped away by attacks from the Russian government.
One Detroit’s Bill Kubota connects with WDET Radio Host and Concert of Colors Director Ismael Ahmed to learn more about the quartet’s connection to Detroit and the cultural significance of their music across the globe. Plus, Ahmed talks with DakhaBrakha’s Artistic Manager Iryna Gorban to hear what’s happening on the ground in Ukraine and how the quartet and other citizens are being affected by the conflict.
