Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor the country’s fallen heroes. People can commemorate the holiday with the “Our War Too: Women in Service” exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum. Plus, there are ways to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the Detroit Institute of Arts and a Detroit City Football Club game.
Plus, Movement Music Festival takes over Hart Plaza in Detroit, the Kensington Art Fair brings sculpture, paintings and more to Milford, and the Charles H. Wright Museum hosts an African Liberation Weekend. One Detroit contributors Cecelia Sharpe and Peter Whorf of 90.9 WRCJ share a handful of events happening around the region this weekend and beyond.
Upcoming Events:
- The Detroit Institute of Arts hosts Asian Sound Revolution in the Rivera Court on May 23 as part of its Friday Night Live! Series.
- The Northville Chamber of Commerce hosts the 38th annual Northville Flower Sale May 23-24. Locally-grown perennials, herbs, annuals, roses, shrubs, and more will be available to buy.
- The Detroit City Football Club hosts an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Night at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck on May 24. They play the Charleston Battery.
- The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit hosts an African Liberation Weekend May 23-25 featuring music, panel discussions, family activities, and celebrations of the African diaspora.
- Movement Music Festival takes place May 24-26 at Hart Plaza in Detroit. It’s one of the largest electronic music festivals in the country.
- The Kensington Art Fair takes place at Kensington Metropark in Milford May 24-26. The fair will feature sculptures, paintings, jewelry and more.
- The “Our War Too: Women in Service” exhibit comes to the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn May 25-Sept. 7. The exhibit highlights the contributions women made during World War II.
- The Gun Violence Memorial Project is on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit through Aug. 10. The project is a living monument that honors people who have lost their lives to gun violence.
