This Week on One Detroit Arts & Culture:
From the ground up: Sphinx Organization celebrates 25 years of diversity in classical music
What started 25 years ago as a single initiative — a single youth competition — to strengthen African American and Latinx representation in classical music has now become a globally-recognized organization and movement to bring more diversity into the classical music industry. Detroit’s Sphinx Organization celebrates 25 years of diversity in classical music this year.
In celebration of the quarter-century milestone, WRCJ 90.9FM Producer and host Celilia Sharpe sits down with Sphinx Organization’s President and Artistic Director Afa Dworkin to talk about the organization’s growth, which now includes four touring orchestras, a global audience of two-million people as well as multiple initiatives for children through adulthood. Plus, the duo discusses the organization’s partnership with Detroit Public Television* and what’s next for the organization, including a 25th-anniversary celebration, concerts at the University Musical Society and more.
Detroit Public Television, One Detroit’s parent broadcast, has an ongoing partnership with the Sphinx Organization to promote its annual competitions and winners.
Returning to the roots: Detroit Vineyards is bringing winemaking back to the Motor City
While some might think owning and operating a vineyard in Detroit might be impossible, Detroit Vineyards shows it’s not. Believe it or not, making wine in the Motor City dates back to some of the earliest days of the city’s story. Grapes used to be grown in Detroit in the late 1700s, Detroit Vineyards Winemaker Kirk Reedy shared, and the last operating winery in the city closed more than 60 years ago, but that was before Detroit Vineyards opened up in 2014.
For “Detroit Performs: Live From Marygrove,” Detroit Vineyards General Manager Chris Southern and Reedy discuss the founding of their Detroit-based winery, its mission of investing in and giving back to the community, returning to the city’s wine-making roots, the wine-making process and where customers can go to get a taste.
Visual artist Tre Marcel talks about transformational nature of makeup
To makeup artist Tre Marcel, founder of Tre Marcel Visual Arts, makeup is more than just a way to just beautify a person. She sees it as a way to transform, embellish and bring out the natural beauty of her clients. For “Detroit Performs: Live from Marygrove,” One Detroit Arts & Culture host Satori Shakoor meets with Marcel to hear how she’s got her start as a makeup artist, the inspiration she finds from other mediums she works in like metalsmithing and what she wants her clients to take from how she embellishes their beauty.
