The urban outdoors: Belle Isle Nature Center re-opens following $2.5 million renovation
The COVID-19 pandemic shut down a lot of places since it began, the Belle Isle Nature Center being one of them, but the nature center’s closure didn’t bring all bad outcomes. It allowed the nature center to complete a $2.5 million renovation that allowed staff to start envisioning a redesign for the public space. The center, which is now re-open, updated the facility to reflect the vibrant intersection between Detroit’s urban core and the natural ecosystem that lives within it.
One Detroit producer Daijah Moss takes a visit to the newly renovated nature center to talk with Director Amy Greene about some of the new renovations visitors will see, like the young learners’ space and the bee vision exhibit, as well as some of the staple exhibits that made their return.

Plus, Moss talks with Belle Isle Nature Center Education Specialist Sierra McWilliams about the variety of programs they offer for children and adults of all ages, and the importance of having a nature center that’s accessible to Detroiters.
