Nov 19, 2025

Detroit PBS Director of Community Engagement Marty Fischhoff is the recipient of a distinguished service award from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary (ETS) in recognition of his work establishing and managing American Black Journal’s “The Black Church in Detroit” initiative.

Fischhoff was honored at the annual ETS Gala at The Henry Hotel in Dearborn on Nov. 14. The evening’s theme was “Celebrating Leaders Who Empower Through Faith and Service.” A brief video presentation celebrating Fischhoff’s professional achievements and contributions was shown prior to him receiving the award.

“The Black Church in Detroit” project began in 2021, and Ecumenical Theological Seminary is a partner in the initiative, along with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.  Fischhoff was instrumental in establishing an advisory committee consisting of religious leaders in Detroit and the surrounding area. Each month, the committee meets virtually to discuss topics of concern to the Black church. American Black Journal dedicates one episode each month to conversations surrounding these issues.

Dr. Deborah Smith Pollard, a gospel radio host on WMXD-FM and University of Michigan -Dearborn professor emerita, also received a distinguished service award from ETS. She has been a guest on ABJ discussing the evolution and influence of gospel music.
