Cybersecurity expert Sakinah Tanzil pushes for more African Americans in the tech industry

Apr 15, 2025

As technology continues to expand, so does the need for cybersecurity experts. Yet, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 18% of African Americans currently work in the field. As a 25-year cybersecurity veteran and career coach, Sakinah Tanzil is raising awareness about the need for more African Americans in the industry.

Tanzil is the author of “Breaking the Cyber Code: A Game Changer That Prepares Our Workforce and Secures the Future.” The book shares Tanzil’s professional journey and the steps it took to reach her goals in the industry. It also provides information on 52 professions in the cybersecurity industry and her advice on how to succeed.

Host Stephen Henderson sat down with Tanzil to discuss opportunities in cybersecurity, especially for African Americans. She reflects on what led her to a career in cybersecurity and explains what readers will learn in her book. Plus, she discusses the importance of cybersecurity, the shortage of cybersecurity experts nationally and globally, and the risks we face today with technology.
