A Pandemic, Election and Billions to Invest: Where Does Michigan Stand in 2022?
As Michigan emerges from the second year of public health and economic challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, with billions of federal dollars to invest in infrastructure, education and the state’s economy, it’s a good a time to take stock of where the state stands right now, and whether its attracting companies to do business in the state.
Plus, with a contentious midterm election coming up in the fall, the state’s top executive jobs could be up for grabs. Christy McDonald examines where Michigan stands in 2022 with One Detroit contributors Nolan Finley and Stephen Henderson.
Mayor Mike Duggan Discusses Detroit’s Plans for Neighborhood Investment, Growth
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan shares, with business leaders across the state, where his City stands with investing in the growth of its neighborhoods.
The Future of Work for Detroit: Investments, Job Availability and Population Declines
One Detroit contributors Nolan Finley, editorial page editor of the Detroit News, and Stephen Henderson, host of American Black Journal, join Christy McDonald for a look at the future of work for Detroit and its residents.
The trio discusses the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on a decreasing tax base and resident population, the ability for Detroit to bring in investments, job availability, the growing base of children and young adults obtaining post-secondary education and what jobs will be there for them in the future. Plus, a look at how to make Michigan more competitive.
The Cost of Higher Education in a Degree-Heavy Workforce
In today’s professional landscape, businesses are looking for a high concentration of workers with college degrees. However, Michigan remains in the bottom third of all 50 states when it comes to the state’s workforce having a post-secondary degree beyond high school.
While the jobs of the future will likely require post-secondary education, the cost of obtaining that education continues to rise. One Detroit looks back to an interview with Business Leaders for Michigan Pres. and CEO Jeff Donofrio to learn more about the changes viewers can expect to see from Michigan’s higher education sector.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Talks Policy, State Spending at Mackinac Policy Conference
As Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer goes up for possible re-election this year, she used her time at the 2022 Mackinac Policy Conference to share the progress the state has seen under her leadership, as well as talk about policy and state spending.
Mackinac Policy Conference Keynote Speakers Inspire Connection, Compassion for Neighbors
One of the big draws of the Detroit Regional Chamber’s annual Mackinac Policy Conference is its ability to invite national thought leaders to the main stage to inspire a sense of hope, community and collaboration between the state’s leaders and key stakeholders in attendance there.
Christy McDonald sat down with “The Soul of America” author and presidential historian Jon Meacham for a conversation on the state of our democracy and how it relates to other tumultuous times in America’s history. Plus, One Detroit revisits parts of legendary news anchor Ted Koppel‘s keynote speech, as well as conversations with Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
The Future of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace
As business leaders turn a new leaf and see the advantages to having a diverse workforce, Christy McDonald examines where diversity, equity and inclusion efforts stand today and how those efforts should look moving forward.
Plus, they discuss the future of women in the workforce and may women attempt to return back to the workforce after leaving initially due to the pandemic.
Polarizing Politics: The Road Blocks to Compromise for Congressional Leaders
Each year at the Mackinac Policy Conference, leaders gather together to determine how Michigan can succeed and move forward together. More often than not, the state’s success rate comes down to the policies congressional leaders put in place and how willing they are to work together.
The picture looks a bit different at the federal level, however, where political polarization has become a frustrating barrier for members of Michigan’s congressional delegation to crack. One Detroit revisits a panel discussion between Republican and Democratic state congress members talking about the price of putting policies into action.
Michigan’s Top Offices Up For Grabs in 2022 Midterm Election
In the wake of new congressional lines and redistricting maps being drawn this year, and the state’s top executive offices being up for grabs, Michigan’s 2022 midterm election will certainly change the trajectory of the state’s progress moving forward.
One Detroit contributors Stephen Henderson and Nolan Finley join Christy McDonald to talk about how state and local election races may shake out this year.
