One Detroit – 2022 Politics, Redistricting Update, COVID Long-Haulers, Thank You Christy
This Week on One Detroit:
2022 Politics Roundtable: Looking Ahead to a Tempestuous Run-up to the in Michigan Election
As we kick off the first few weeks of 2022, Michigan politics have already brought forth some interesting changes. With new congressional maps adopted in the state, and statewide election races in motion, a lot of funding and competition are likely to build up over the next 10 months approaching November. Looking ahead, One Detroit’s Christy McDonald sits down with contributors Stephen Henderson and Nolan Finley for a roundtable discussion to talk about what might be coming next in Michigan politics this year.
Michigan’s New Redistricting Maps Change Election Races, Face Legal Challenges
The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission continues to face backlash after announcing and adopting new maps for legislative and congressional districts late last year. The new maps have changed the landscape of statewide races for the upcoming election, and the commission continues to face litigation over the maps, with new legal challenges coming forward. As the impacts of Michigan’s new congressional maps, which stay in effect for 10 years, continue to unfold, One Detroit’s Will Glover checks in with Bridge Michigan reporter Sergio Martínez-Beltrán to hear what’s happening in the aftermath of these newly adopted districts.
COVID Long-Haulers: The People Still Suffering from the Virus
As the United States and Michigan continue to face some of the highest COVID-19 with the Omicron variant since the start of the pandemic, the long-term effects of the virus for many who have already contracted it is still relatively unknown. More than two years into the pandemic, millions of people — COVID Long-Haulers — continue to deal with lingering symptoms months after first contracting the virus. Medical research on the topic is ongoing, but what have they discovered so far and what’s still to learn? One Detroit’s Bill Kubota connects with experts from Henry Ford Health System, The University of Michigan, and the Detroit Medical Center, along with patients still trying to shake the illness themselves, about the ways people’s bodies are still being ailed by COVID in the long-term.
