2026 Jazz Fest Artist-in-Residence Joe Lovano visits Wayne State, offers a preview of the Labor Day weekend event

Apr 10, 2026

Renowned saxophonist Joe Lovano takes center stage as this year’s Artist-in-Residence for the 47th annual Detroit Jazz Festival. Lovano, a Cleveland native, has long been influenced by Detroit’s rich jazz history. He recently brought that experience to life during a special master class at Wayne State University. Students had the opportunity to watch him perform and hear firsthand about the ways Detroit’s vibrant jazz scene has left its mark on his artistry.

During his visit, One Detroit contributor John Penney of 90.9 WRCJ sat down with Lovano to discuss his journey as a musician, his connection to the city and what inspires his music. Lovano also talked about what he plans to bring to this year’s Jazz Fest. The Detroit Jazz Festival takes place at Hart Plaza over Labor Day Weekend.
