One Detroit Weekend: February 23, 2024
Black History Month continues with a host of events in and around Detroit to celebrate and learn about Black culture. The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers hosts a performance in Southfield, the Detroit Historical Society celebrates Black entrepreneurship, and saxophonist Kenny Garrett plays his “Sounds from the Ancestors” album at Orchestra Hall.

Upcoming Events:
- The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers joins the city of Southfield’s Celebrate Black History Month lineup with a performance Friday, Feb. 23 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Southfield Pavilion.
- The Livonia Symphony will perform “Melodic Melodies” featuring Sibelius Symphony No. 2 on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Clarenceville Schmidt Auditorium.
- The Detroit Historical Society will celebrate Black Detroit entrepreneurs at its “On the Shoulders of Giants: Celebrating Black History Month” event on Sunday, Feb. 25 at the Detroit Historical Museum.
- The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is currently showing Philadelphia-based artist John. E Dowell’s “Paths to Freedom” photography exhibit, on display through July 7.
- The City of Detroit, Visit Detroit and its partners have teamed up for “On The Clock” tours for people to learn more about Detroit’s neighborhoods ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
- Jazz saxophonist Kenny Garrett will perform songs from his latest album “Sounds from the Ancestors” on Friday, Feb. 23 beginning at 8 p.m. at Orchestra Hall in Detroit.
- The Detroit Monster Jam makes its way back to Ford Field for a day of truck driving and smashing on Sunday, Feb. 25.
- The Detroit Institute of Arts hosts four chances – Feb. 22 and 24 and March 3 and 8 – to see this year’s Oscar-nominated short documentaries ahead of the awards ceremony.
