One Detroit Weekend: January 19, 2024
As you head into this wintry weekend, here’s what’s coming up in and around Detroit. Celebrate the 85th anniversary of Blue Note Records at The Majestic Theatre; pay tribute to Prince during a performance at Aretha’s Jazz Cafe; and commemorate Ann Arbor’s bicentennial with a kickoff celebration at Michigan Theater.

List of Upcoming Events:
- Blue Note Records celebrates its 85th anniversary at The Majestic Theatre Friday, Jan. 19. The special anniversary performance features the Blue Note Quintet, a group that honors the label’s rich history and paves the way for the artists of today’s roster.
- Aretha’s Jazz Cafe kicks off its “Flowers: A Tribute Series” Friday, Jan. 19 with a tribute to Prince. Aretha’s will host two shows featuring live music from Saxappeal, The Crü and other musicians.
- Stagecrafters hosts its final weekend of “Girls Weekend,” a play about a group of women who survive a camping trip with laughs and wine. The play runs through January 21 at The Baldwin Theatre.
- Flint-based artist Ash Arder displays her exhibit “Flesh Tones,” which explores the connection between identity and material possessions, at the Cranbrook Art Museum through February 25.
- The Detroit Repertory Theatre hosts its second weekend of the play “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” a stunning spiritual tale of self-discovery and searching for your song. The play runs through March 3.
- The city of Ann Arbor celebrates its 200th birthday at a bicentennial kickoff celebration Friday, Jan. 19 at the Michigan Theater. The celebration will include live music, a silent auction, information about a bicentennial legacy project and more.
- The War Memorial brings its popular Winter Brunch and Concert series back this season, starting with a Jan. 21 performance by jazz pianist Scott Gwinnell and vocalist Emma Aboukasm in the Alger Center Ballroom.
- Motor City Casino Hotel’s Sound Board Stage welcomes singer Chanté Moore to the stage for a performance Friday, Jan. 19. You must be 21+ to attend this event.
