Closing the reading gap in Detroit Public Schools

So much talk about opening Detroit schools this fall, but when the students get inside, most will still find themselves behind in their reading skills.

As One Detroit’s Nolan Finley learned, 85% of Detroit Public Schools Community District students read below grade level.

He also heard about a way to help solve that literacy deficit from Pamela Good.

She’s behind Beyond Basics, a reading improvement program that’s been implemented in Detroit.

It’s a small start. A lot more funding is needed to get Beyond Basics really going.

Good tells Finley how it works in this conversation.
