Christy McDonald to Step Down as Weekly Anchor of Detroit PBS’s ‘One Detroit’
The founding One Detroit managing editor to continue to anchor DPTV coverage of the Mackinac Policy Conference
Metro Detroit — Christy McDonald, the longtime anchor and managing editor of “One Detroit,” has announced her intention to leave her position with Detroit Public Television in mid-January, in order to devote more time to expanding her career pursuits.
“All of us at Detroit PBS wish Christy nothing but success,” said Rich Homberg, DPTV’s president and CEO. “We will miss working with her on a weekly basis. She deserves much of the credit for all the progress we have made turning ‘One Detroit’ into the trusted, community-based journalism show that it has become.
“We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Christy on special projects such as the 2022 Mackinac Policy Conference in the months ahead.”
Christy McDonald joined the station in 2011 helping to launch Detroit Public TV’s annual coverage of the Mackinac Policy Conference and its Great Lakes Now coverage of Great Lakes Week. By 2012, McDonald helped create and anchor the weekly news and public affairs show, “MiWeek,’ which focused on in-studio, opinionated discussions of topical issues.
With McDonald’s guidance, the show was reformatted and renamed “One Detroit” in 2018. It became a leading model of a new style of local journalism, shot mainly on location and deeply rooted in the diverse communities of Metro Detroit.
“I am proud of all the work we have done to bring engaging stories to our community in a thoughtful, compassionate way. I know One Detroit will continue that mission,” McDonald said.
The One Detroit bureau of reporters and producers actively engage with political, business, grassroots and neighborhood leaders to better understand the needs and concerns of their communities and create content accordingly. Under McDonald’s leadership, the program has won a number of esteemed journalism awards.
She has anchored both the long-running “One Detroit” news show on Thursday and the recently launched Monday night “One Detroit,” which concentrates on the latest developments in arts and culture. Both shows debut at 7:30 p.m., with repeat airings throughout the week.
As the leading voice of “One Detroit,” McDonald has played a dominant role in DPTV’s coverage of the Mackinac Policy Conference, the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Policy Conference and other prominent public forums.
“Christy is a consummate professional, who brought years of newsroom expertise to her work on One Detroit,” said Ed Moore, vice president of content at DPTV. “She has been a great colleague and friend and a remarkable ambassador for the station across the state of Michigan. We wish her all the best.”
