Henry Ford Health System physician Dennis Cunningham, MD, an infectious diseases expert and pediatrician explained what helped cause the recent dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases in Michigan.

“When school sports resumed there were hundreds of outbreaks associated with sporting events,” Dr. Cunningham said, “Each outbreak in turn had hundreds of cases with it.”

 Speaking at the latest COVID313 Town Hall, he also blamed spring break travel as another big factor for the surge.

 Angela Cruz, MD, an infectious disease fellow at Detroit Medical Center said the the current vaccines “are showing efficacy” against the Great Britain variant of the virus that’s now being detected extensively in Michigan.
